JH art SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS!
Sketchbook assignments are due every Thursday!
Each week you can choose to look at an artwork from a google slideshow and write answers to 5 questions, OR you can choose one of the drawing prompts for that unit.
For drawing prompts:
Pick any one from the list and spend at least 20 minutes drawing.
You must title the page in your sketchbook with the title of the prompt you chose and the date.
Make sure I know which page to turn to - use a bookmark, paperclip, or fold the corner.
They are graded with a checklist: 10 pts total

Did you follow the drawing prompt and/or complete the assigned questions? 5 pts

Is it properly titled and dated? 1 pt

Did you put effort and care into it, and take at least 20-30 minutes to complete it? 4 pts
For each day late (unless absent), it is -1 points!
You can use any medium (pencil, marker, paint, etc), and any style (realistic, cartoony, etc).
Reference images are not required, but always helpful!
Have fun! Choose a prompt you really like and have an exciting idea for!
For writing:

Which artwork did you choose? Write the title and artist.

Describe the work of art. Use at least 3 elements of art and principles of design words. Write at least 3 sentences.

Do you like it? Why or why not? Write at least 3 sentences.

What do you think it means/why do you think the artist made it that way? Write at least 3 sentences.

If you could talk to the artist, what questions would you ask them about their art? (You cannot write ‘none’... you must think of at least one question.)
They are graded out of 10 points. Each question is worth 2 points.
For each day late (unless absent), it is -1 points!
Aboriginal Paintings
Writing: Choose an artwork from the google slideshow on google classroom, and answer the 5 questions on the previous page.
Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Draw a landscape that you see on a regular basis (your backyard, a park, what you see on the way to school, etc).

Draw an interesting abstract pattern using only one shape (only circles, only triangles, etc).

Draw something that represents a family story (something that happened to your family, that your family talks about/remembers).

Draw something from God’s creation that inspires you.

Go out into nature and draw how you feel/ what you think/ what you experience.
Tibetan Buddhist Mandalas
Writing: Choose an artwork from the google slideshow on google classroom, and answer the 5 questions on the previous page.
Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Draw a mandala using only straight lines/ geometric shapes

Draw a mandala using only curvy lines/ organic shapes

Find something in real life that has rotational symmetry. Draw it.

Imagine you are a graffiti artist who makes art that encourages people.What uplifting graffiti would you put up in your neighborhood?

Write your name - but make it art.
Native American woven baskets
Writing: Choose an artwork from the google slideshow on google classroom, and answer the 5 questions on the previous page.
Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Think of a functional vessel you use every day (cup, bowl, box, etc) that you love. Draw it.

Draw the most beautiful basket you could imagine.

Draw hands doing something (weaving, cooking, drawing, etc).

Draw what you hope for your future.

Draw a lesson you’ve learned from your past.
Chinese New Year lanterns

Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Draw your favorite holiday tradition (any holiday).

Draw light shining in the dark (a lamp, candle, the sun, etc) - make it feel like it’s really LIGHT!

Look up a few chinese characters. Draw them and write what they mean.

Draw your favorite holiday food (any holiday).

This year is the year of the tiger. Draw a tiger.
Japanese Shibori
Writing: Choose an artwork from the google slideshow on google classroom, and answer the 5 questions on the previous page.
Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Draw something using only blue and white.

Don’t draw, sew something on the paper in your sketchbook!

Draw moving water.

Draw drapey flowy fabric. .
African Textiles
Writing: Choose an artwork from the google slideshow on google classroom, and answer the 5 questions on the previous page.
Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Draw an interesting abstract pattern.

Think of what advice you would give yourself if you could go back and talk to yourself from last year. Write it down and draw something that illustrates that.

Think of 2 characters from a well known children’s story (disney, folk tale, nursery rhyme, etc). Draw a symbol that represents each of those characters and what they are like. .

Create a stamp from something around your house and dip it in ink or paint and stamp a pattern in your sketchbook.

Draw your favorite outfit. Write why it is your favorite.
South American Ocarina

Drawing: Choose one of these options:

Think of a favorite song and illustrate the lyrics.

Listen to some instrumental music and draw whatever pops into your head.

Design an album cover for your favorite artist/band’s next album.

If you had to draw something to explain music to someone who was deaf and has never heard music before, how would you? Draw it.

Russian Matroyshka
